BIGSET-2 site (Arabian Sea)
BIGSET field studies were carried out in regions also investigated by JGOFS process studies in the Northeast Atlantic (BIOTRANS) and the Arabian Sea. Both study sites are characterised by
strong temporal variations in export fluxes from the upper mixed layer. BIOTRANS has been previously surveyed by the German
BIO-C-FLUX and BIOTRANS programmes (Pfannkuche 1993). BIOTRANS was one of the core stations of the
20°W-North Atlantic Bloom Study (Ducklow & Harris 1993). BENGAL was intensively studied be the European Union MAST III-Programme
BENGAL.
The five BIGSET stations NAST, WAST, CAST, EAST and SAST provided a spatial coverage of the entire Arabian Sea Basin between 5°N - 20°N and 60°E - 68°E. They were partly covered by
US-JGOFS ,UK-JGOFS and
German JGOFS-studies BIGSET results greatly benefited from multi-year sediment trap deployments (typically 1000m above the
sea bed) located in the vicinity of our study sites in the Arabian Sea (Haake et al. 1993, Honjo et al. 1999, Rixen et al. 1996) and at BIOTRANS (Honjo & Manganini 1993, Newton et al. 1994,
Pfannkuche et al.1999).

In order to present properly the results Ocean Data View (Reiner Schlitzer, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research) has been applied.
